Baby Window Shopping? Don't Mind If I Do!

So, there's a giveaway going on at ohdeardrea (and anyone who knows me, knows how much I love free stuff!). The giveaway is for Barley & Birch, a baby clothing store that "least 15% of our profits to a variety of organizations working all over the world to improve the lives of others". Love that! But what I love more is this:
This is their "Haiti Tee". The website states: "100% of the purchase price of this pieces go to various organizations managing schools, clinics, and shelters in Haiti". As someone who has a tie to Haiti (my father is Haitian and didn't come to the U.S. until he was 13), I know firsthand how anything helps.

Barley & Birch have lots of cute pieces so check them out!
Oh, and of course, check out ohdeardrea!

Project 31: Day 8

Day 8. Have a beauty secret (e.g. hair tip, make up tip)? Share, please!
I don't have any beauty secrets of my own. Most of the stuff that I've learned have come from YouTube videos. The most useful tip I've come across is for controlling oily skin. All you need is original Milk of Magnesia, facial moisturizer and cotton balls. Apply your facial moisturizer to a damp face. While allowing your face to dry, put a little bit of Milk of Magnesia onto a cotton ball (I usually turn the bottle of Milk of Magnesia upside down then just swirl a cotton ball in the bottle cap since you only need a little bit). Dab the Milk of Magnesia onto the oily areas of your face and allow to set in (you'll look crazy but only for a little while). Once the Milk of Magnesia has set into your skin, apply your foundation as normal. This little secret will keep the oil at bay.
Check out the video here: lilpumpkinpie05's Controlling oil: fresh makeup ALL DAY long!

Project 31: Day 6

Day 6. Your most embarrassing moment
Most of my embarrassing moments have to do with alcohol (which is kind of sad but hey, at least I know how to avoid them, right). My most embarrassing moment came after graduating from Airman Leadership School at McConnell Air Force Base. I had just been awarded the John Levitow Award (the highest honor awarded to a graduate at ALS) and decided to celebrate with my classmates. Since I didn't know my way around Wichita, I rode with a friend to the celebratory house party. Once there, the drinking began. There was a keg and plenty of alcohol. Now, my drinking skills must not have been what I thought they were because I got pretty intoxicated. So intoxicated that I wasn't feeling too good. That's when I had the brilliant idea to go lay down in the backseat of my friend's car. Yeah, I definitely threw up in the car. A classmate helped me out when I decided that I was no longer going to walk and decided to sit on the ground outside where I proceeded to throw up all over my favorite flip flops (still makes me sad to this day). After that, I decided that it was best for me to sleep it off. The next morning I headed home (barefoot since those flip flops were ruined) as soon as I woke up and was just glad that I wouldn't have to face any of my ALS classmates again.

Project 31: Day 5

Day 5. Write a blog thanking someone who has made your heart come alive.

To my two favorite men,
Will, I want to thank you for being the amazing man that you are. You have a huge heart that seems to be rare nowadays. You love me unconditionally even when I'm at my worse and I can't thank you enough for that. They say that the first year of marriage is the hardest and if that's true, the rest of our years together will be a piece of cake.
Liam, From the first time I laid eyes on you, you've had my heart (and had me wrapped around your finger). Just seeing your little baby face fills my heart with a joy I can't even begin to explain. You have opened a new chapter in my life and I hope that your dad and I can be amazing parents for you. I'm excited to embark on this parenting journey and to see you grow into a man.
Love you both with all my heart!

Project 31: Day 4

Day 4. Do you believe in the "cry until he sleeps" method?
I haven't had to find this on out firsthand. I have never let Liam cry long enough for him to fall asleep. He currently co-sleeps which helps with him sleeping at night. He's only 13 weeks old though so I'm sure I'll plenty of time to experience crying during nap/bedtime.

Liam is 3 Months Old!

Today is Liam's three month birthday :)
My little boy is growing so fast. I can't believe that's it's been three months since I was sitting in a hospital bed holding him for the first time (before he took his very first helicopter ride).

As of today, he's 15 lbs, almost double his birth weight. Crazy! Breastfeeding is still going well. As long as he's gaining weight, we have nothing to worry about. We're trying to do tummy time more often but I hate hearing him cry. I bought him a few more toys to play with so hopefully that will help. He's definitely a happy baby. He loves to talk and smile (unless he sees a camera). I was able to catch one though :)
Have a great day (and St. Patty's Day everyone)!

Project 31: Day 2

Day 2. What makes you uniquely you?
Like everyone else in the world, I think my life experiences make me uniquely me. If I didn't experience the things I have, I would definitely be different. I've been through a lot and experienced a lot of things that have shaped me into the person I am. There are moments that I wouldn't want to relive but I know that if I changed them, I wouldn't be the person I am today. I'll just use those experiences to be a better person, a better mom and use them as a lesson for Liam (and any future children we may have).

Co-Sleeping...

As I mentioned in my "attachment" parenting post, Liam and I co-sleep. It was not my plan from the beginning but I've learned, first-hand, that parenting (or anything to do with children really) cannot be planned. The main driving force behind Liam ending up in our bed is the fact that I breastfeed. It is just so much easier to turn over and feed him rather than get up. I know this sounds lazy but when you're sleep deprived, anything goes.
As of right now, co-sleeping works for us. Since Will is deployed and we kicked the dogs out of the bed months ago, there is plenty of room for us. We have quite awhile before Will gets home and I definitely want to have Liam out of the bed by then but right now, I'm not really in a huge rush. That being said, I am struggling to figure out when we should make the transition.
I haven't really thought too much about moving him to a crib until recently when I realized that at night, he will not sleep alone. During the day, he gets rocked to sleep and is sometimes moved to his swing where he will continue to sleep (at least for a little while) but at night, if I leave him alone in the bed, he will surely wake up (and it won't be pretty). I'm getting scared that the longer I wait, the harder it will be. And even worse, I'll keep putting it off and the next thing I know, I'm attempting to sleep with Liam and Will (who's 6'2" and over 200 lbs.) in our queen size bed.
I think I'll start asking the advice of other moms who co-slept with their kids (and were able to get them out of the bed by, let's say, six months). Until then, Liam and I will continue to take advantage of the cuddletime that comes along with our current sleeping arrangement.
Night everyone!

Returning to Work (boo!)

I don't know how I forgot to mention returning to my National Guard base this past weekend. After three months off, I returned to work on March 5th. For days beforehand, I was dreading leaving because I hate crying (even the thought of crying upsets me and therefore, makes me want to cry). Since my base is over an hour away and work starts at 0700, I had to leave the house around 0530. I usually stay the weekend but the base daycare was full so my mom watched Liam and I came home Saturday after work.
Come to find out, all my worrying was for nothing. The day flew by since I had three months of classes to catch up on. I was busy all day doing physicals, online classes, an interview for another job, etc. Now don't get me wrong, I definitely missed Liam but I got to talk to all the other parents in my shop about our kids so it was fun. It also helped that my boss put the birth announcement I sent on the fridge :)
Hopefully I'll be able to stay the night with Liam next month instead of driving home but either way, I'm sure I'll miss being with him. Next month will also be the first time I will be away overnight since I have a conference two hours away. I know that Liam will be in good hands as long as I start pumping to make sure that he won't starve.
Uh, oh. Someone's waking up from their nap. Goodbye for now!

Stop Growing So Fast!!

Every time I turn around, it seems as if Liam is doing something new.

Over the last week or so, he's decided that he doesn't want to lay down. He seems to think that he's been doing P90X and all of a sudden has the ab strength to sit up. Yeah, not so much.

He's also has become a lot more vocal. He loves "talking" and gets so excited when someone engages in a conversation with him. And speaking of Liam's mouth, he's discovered that he has hands, well, mostly a right hand. He constantly has his hand in his mouth and even tries to suck his thumb (although the look on his face is of pure confusion, almost as if he doesn't quite understand what he's doing).

Since his two month appointment, he's gained one pound and upgraded from newborn to three month clothing (or some 0-3 month). He has a collection of really nice newborn clothes that I love but I have to let them go now (tear). Luckily, I have a small collection of clothing in all sizes so he's okay until I make it to the store to pick up more. I love shopping and think that little boy's clothing is super adorable. Hopefully I'll be able to find some good sales and pick up my little man some great pieces (oh, and at least one new blanky, can never have too many of those).

Well, Mr. Liam is fussy so he's going to be rocked to sleep. Goodbye for now!

My Parenting Style?

I've always wondered what type of parent I would be. Although my parents divorced when I was fairly young, their parenting styles have far outlasted their marriage. My dad was definitely a disciplinarian. He ruled with an iron fist even if that meant not showing emotions. My mom, on the other hand, was the complete opposite. She laid no rules and there were no consequences for our actions. Whenever I thought of becoming a parent, I hoped that I would be a mixture of the two since I know the outcome of their two different styles. I wanted to be a parent who set rules but could be someone my children could always depend on emotionally.

Considering that Liam is only two months old, I definitely have not figured out my parenting style yet. As of right now, I am a co-sleeping (or bed-sharing, whichever you prefer), baby-wearing, nursing on demand mother. This parenting style ("attachment parenting" as it's called in What to Expect the First Year) was not something I planned. It just sort of felt right for the situation Liam and I found ourselves in. It works for us and if it no longer works, I'm sure we'll figure something else out.

Parenting, thus far, has seemed like a lot of trial and error. Whenever you tell someone you have a child (or are pregnant), they give you tons of advice on everything from diapers to immunizations but when it comes down to it, it's based on personal experience. Liam and I have plenty of time to figure out what parenting styles works for us. I just hope that in the end, I can look back and know that I was the best parent for him regardless.
